Your Support Can Help People Overcome Addiction

Give the gift of recovery this Christmas

Christmas is a magical time for many of us, but for those struggling with alcohol and drug addiction it can be a painful time of year. For people like Jen* Christmas is, thankfully, now a joyful time, but it hasn’t always been that way. Jen has worked hard in our residential rehabilitation program to address her past trauma, overcome challenges and create a path to recovery.

Donate today to give people like Jen the gift of recovery this Christmas.

Jen experienced unimaginable hardships that led to her addiction to alcohol, now she is thriving.

Jen had a difficult childhood. Following the death of her mother, she found herself moving between care from her grandparents and her father until she became a ward of the state at the tender age of 10.

Celebrations were not part of her daily life and the lack of joy during her formative years shaped her adult life, leading her to seek out the magic she missed as a child.

As an adult with a successful career in the finance industry, Jen faced further challenges, including domestic violence and alcohol use. A mother of three, Jen bravely left her husband of 13 years, packing up the car and children while he was at work.

Sometime later, Jen met her “Prince Charming” and made the decision to live with him when Covid restrictions were introduced. Like many people, it was during this time that Jen’s reliance on alcohol escalated, “alcohol was easily accessible - they would deliver it to your door.”

It was also around this time that the new relationship became violent.

“My coping mechanism was alcohol,” Jen shares. “When you’re intoxicated, you’re numb. When someone puts their hand on you, you can’t feel it.”

After a violent incident that involved police intervention Jen realised that she needed to reclaim her life and begin healing. She sought treatment at Odyssey.

Having time to reflect on her past, Jen realised that she was the only one who would always be there for her, “someone else is just a quick fix, but the issue will still be there. You’ve got to be okay with yourself, because if you can’t, it’s going to be a harder life.”

Give the gift of recovery this Christmas

As a recent graduate of the Odyssey House NSW Residential program, Jen is now focusing on breaking the cycle of trauma and providing a safe and stable environment for her children.

Jen wants her children to experience the joy and love of significant moments like Christmas, which she believes should be filled with magic, light and happiness.

Please, will you donate today to help give people like Jen the chance to overcome addiction?
