Omar started using drugs socially with his friends. What began as a recreational activity soon became a daily habit.
Omar is a 35-year-old man who started using drugs socially with his friends. What began as a recreational activity soon became a daily habit. Before long, his drug use had spiralled out of control, and he found himself in a dark place.
Thankfully, Omar found his way to Odyssey and was able to access not only our withdrawal services, but also our multicultural services and our well-being services. Through these programs, Omar was able to explore and embrace his Arabic background, which he had previously been disconnected from, and address his underlying mental health concerns that had been contributing to his substance use.
Omar credits the caring and compassionate staff at Odyssey for helping him turn his life around. It’s now been a year since he stopped using drugs. He’s happier and motivated to pursue his dream of starting his own business.
We asked Omar what he would tell his younger self:
"I wish I could tell myself that it's okay to ask for help, even when it feels scary or embarrassing. That my struggles do not define me; and that I am so much more than my mistakes. I am worthy of love and support."
Omar’s story is just one example of the impact that your donations can have on the lives of those experiencing addiction. Your support enables Odyssey House NSW to provide crucial services to those in need.
